straight and narrow way...
Peter wants to know...
what he will get for all his giving up of stuff…
Matthew 19:27-30 -
He says, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?"
Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.
What I like about this passage:
Peter's question is not thrown out by Jesus...
Jesus doesn’t say "get behind me satan for selfishly thinking of what you are going to get by following me".
No, Jesus validates his question and encourages these kinds of thoughts by answering Peter with something far greater than anything he could have expected in this age or the age to come.
The exchange rate is really great “…will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life”
Things that make me tremble in this passage:
We do have to leave things. We exchange the cares of this life for eternal glory - pretty sweet deal! But to set our face like flint, set our hearts on the pilgrimage and believe in the unseen… the narrow way… there are few who choose this way.
There really are first and last in heaven... there are more and less and degrees. Yes, every one is happy for eternity but storing of treasure in heaven is real. Some store more than others. I ask for wisdom to store treasure in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy.
